Step 4 - Filing
Below I will be stepping you through how to do a Self Pedicure, and looking in particular at Filing.
The main aim of filing is to shape your toe nails using an Emery Board without causing them any damage.
Filing Technique
- Hold the emery board lightly with your thumb, index finger and middle finger.
- Hold the emery board at a 90 degree angle (which differs from Manicure)
- Start filing the toe nail in one direction only, keeping the emery board at a 90 degree angle
- Continue filing until you achieve a square shape toe nail, which has a straight free edge with smooth corners.
- File down the free edge to the perfect length shown below
Techniques to Avoid
- Do not use a sewing action as this can lead to nails splitting and may even damage the matrix.
- Try not to file into the sides of the nail as this may weaken the nail and lead to ingrown toenails.
