Manicure at Home
Step 1 - Filing
Welcome one and all as we begin learning about performing a Manicure at Home. Our first step in the process is Filing!
The main aim of filing is to shape your nails without causing damage. The shaping of the nails is achieved by using an Emery Board, which are commonly found in department stores and beauty supply stores.
Best Filing Technique
- Hold the emery board lightly with your thumb, index finger and middle finger
- Hold the emery board at a 45 degree angle
- Start filing the nail in one direction only, keeping the emery board at a 45 degree angle
- Continue filing until you achieve the shape you like from the list of shapes below. Each shape needs a different technique
♥ Round Nail Shape ♥
A round shaped nail will give the nail strength, making it hard to break and also looks natural. To make a round shape you need to:- File down the free edge to the length you like
- File off the top corners of the nail to make them round
- Make the curve of the free edge smooth
♥ Square Nail Shape ♥
A square shaped nail has an almost straight free edge with smooth corners. This shape is fairly strong, but not as strong as a round shape. This shape is usually chosen as it is a popular fashion trend. To make a square shape you need to:- File down the free edge to the length you like
- Make the side of the nails straight by holding the emery board along the side wall
- Slightly curve the corners of the free edge
- Smooth the free edge
♥ Oval Nail Shape ♥
An oval shaped nail makes your fingernails look elegant but unfortunately it makes them easier to break. To make an oval shape you need to:- File down the free edge to the length you like
- Form an arch shape from the Side Wall to the top of the free edge
- Try to make both sides symmetrical, creating a smooth egg shape
To be avoided
- Do not use a sewing action as this can lead to nails splitting and peeling layers off the nails.
- Try not to file into the sides of the nail as this may weaken the nail.
All Done!! - Where to Now??
